Controlled substance or dangerous drug: Limitations.

1.

Any prescription for a controlled substance, regardless of the authorization to refill given by the prescribing practitioner, must not be refilled more than five times or after 6 months have elapsed from the date it was originally issued and may be refilled only in keeping with the number of doses ordered and the directions for use.

2.

Any prescription for a dangerous drug, regardless of the authorization to refill given by the prescribing practitioner, must not be refilled after 1 year has elapsed from the date it was originally issued and may be refilled only in keeping with the number of doses ordered and the directions for use.

3.

If no authorization to refill is given by the prescribing practitioner, or if the prescription is refillable and has been refilled for the number of times or for the period set forth in subsection 1 or 2, the original prescription is invalid and a new prescription must be obtained and placed in the prescription file.
